Retention

KytchakWhen we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment.  Retention is very important to maintain the results you have worked so hard to achieve.   Depending on your individual treatment plan, you may have fixed retainers, removable retainers or both.  It is very important that you follow the instructions for retainer wear and care given to you the day the braces are removed.

The supervised retention phase lasts 12 months in our office. After that, you are an official orthodontic graduate, but retention does not end there.  In order to maintain your new smile, retainer wear must continue for life.  Removable retainers are like glasses.   They will need to be replaced periodically.  Again please follow the instructions given to you the day the braces are removed.  Fixed retainers also need daily care and need to be checked periodically by your family dentist.

Only you can maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment.  If you have any questions regarding retainer care or maintenance please make sure you ask.  Failure to follow retainer instructions can result in your teeth shifting.
